Hackers use ransomware to extort money from their victims. Ransomware is written to contain scripts that will run if the file containing ransomware is opened. The scripts are designed to block access to the user’s files and data.

Once the ransomware has deployed, it typically displays a message informing the user that they have been the victim of a cyber attack, alongside details of how to unlock their data. The hackers will normally ask for payment in the form of cryptocurrency in exchange for encryption keys which will unlock the user’s files.
