What is Smishing?
Smishing is a type of phishing that uses mobile phones as attack platforms.
Criminals carry out attacks with the goal of gathering personal information such as social security numbers and credit card numbers.
Smishing is performed via text her message or SMS, giving the attack the name “SMiShing”.
Prevention Number 1 – Don’t reply
When a text message says “texting `stop` to stop receiving messages”, never reply. If you are sure the message is from some scam, the reply can actually lead to more spam messages on your phone.
The same can be said for calling numbers. Often scammers don’t know if the numbers they’re using actually work.
Providing a reply will allow them to verify that the number is indeed working, which will keep them going and potentially increase the number of scam messages you receive.
Prevention Number 2 – Don’t click on any links
Do not click on any links contained within it. Instead, delete the message and report it to your service provider.
Smishing is a type of phishing attack that uses text messages to lure victims into clicking on malicious links. These links may lead to malware, scams, or other fraudulent activity.
Prevention Number 3 – VPN on your mobile device
You can also install a VPN on your mobile device, which will encrypt your traffic and make it more difficult for attackers to intercept your data. By taking this precaution, you can help to protect yourself from smishing attacks.
Prevention Number 4 – Web search
If you receive a smishing message, do not respond to it.
Instead, do a web search of both the number and the message content to see if it has been reported as a scam. If you cannot find anything, report the message to your cell phone carrier and then delete it.
Prevention Number 5 – Call the company directly, if spoofing occurs
If you’re not sure, if the message is spoofing a company that you do not have any business with, be wary.
It’s best to call the company directly using the customer service number listed on their website. That way, you can verify that the request is legitimate and take appropriate action if it isn’t.
